Ethel Victoria Abbott was born on 9 Oct 1879 in Melbourne to William Henry Abbott (1839-1922), brewer, and Mary Elizabeth Searle (1841-1936), cordial manufacturer. The family moved to Launceston in 1879. Ethel married John Grist at Fitzroy, Victoria, in 1897. John was the manager of Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) in Melbourne. He died on 31 Jul 1951 aged 85. Ethel died in Melbourne on 12 Sep 1973 aged 93 but her ashes were buried with her husband in the family plot E No. 45 at the Carr Villa Cemetery, Launceston.
